Shishapangma: Hiking at the Foot of an 8,000-Meter Giant 希夏邦马 (a)

Mount Shishapangma is the 14th highest mountain in the world at 8,027m, the lowest of the fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, and the only one entirely within China. First summited in 1964 by a Chinese team, it’s a significant achievement in high-altitude climbing history.

In recent years, hiking routes around Shishapangma have gained popularity. The standard itinerary starts from the southern valley, follows the eastern flank, loops back at the northern end to reach the spectacular northern glacier.
